Working From Home 101
Working from home.. it is the big dream of thousands of people. As we have moved through the last 50 years or so, and more people have decided because of either business downsizing, or mothers wanting to be with their children but still needing an income the demand has grown.
With the advent and advancement of computer technology and the Internet there are more opportunities than ever. Planning is essential if your goal is to have a home based business.
What in the beginning starts as a way to earn a little extra income can turn into quite the money eating monster if one is not careful. When you are evaluating working from home there are a few points to consider. Do you have the basic business tools you need?:
- A dedicated Computer that isn’t out of date and you can operate a business with.
- A good working knowledge of the Internet, web email, browsing, downloading, uploading, bookmarking etc.
- The ability to print documents with an cost effective, reliable printer.
- The ability to fax either through your computer or with an actual fax machine.
- Broadband (DSL) or other high speed connection.
- A business email, either from your own domain or one that is business friendly.
- A Second or business phone line with a cost effective long distance plan.
- A dedicated area for your “office”, that the kids don’t play in, or isn’t in the middle of flow of traffic in your home, and you can close off so you can focus your attention.
- A Separate bank account to track your income and expenses.
- Time.
Even if your goal is humble, “making a little extra income” you must come into this endeavor prepared. The rule “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”, really does hold true. You can have “hobby” income ore “business” income. Either way you will need the tools to get you started off on the right foot because with all the hard work you will put into it you want to have the ability to grow your business perhaps to reach a dream and if you start out with a poor computer, no computer skills, little to no time, and an ineffective office setup you will continually be fighting to “catch up”.
Working from home is attainable if you plan accordingly, work strategically and logically, and start small always working towards your big goal. If you have never done some aspect of your new business you will have to take time to educate yourself by finding the resources that will do that for you, or reaching out to someone you know that can teach you.
No matter how many sales letters you read that say “I made $10,000.00 in 7 Days”, or “The Surefire solution to your money problems that ANYONE can do.”, repeat these words to yourself ” If anyone can do this why aren’t they, where are these people?”
Be a skeptic - It is your intuition’s way of letting you know that something is not quite right. If you run across something with minimal cost with a guarantee.. go ahead, check it out. Do a Google search on who is offering it, read reviews. You wouldn’t buy a car without a warranty, heck you probably don’t buy a new food product without reading the label and you should also practice due diligence when looking for a home business.
