Do I Really Need a Website?

I am asked often by people promoting different affiliate programs or products if you really need your own website. Now some people will hedge on this and tell you not to worry about it.. you don’t need one. The fact is you don’t NEED a website to promote affiliates or products but the reality is you aren’t going to get far if you don’t have one.

They will talk about promoting your link through ezines, classifieds, and email but really if you don’t have your own piece of real-estate you it will be much more of an uphill battle. Look around, how many big names in internet marketing do you know.. or can you think of. Type their name in Google.. see what happens.

I do get a little upset when the truth is when you look all around and anyone who is anyone has a site and then someone who is trying to sell you their product or have you become an affiliate they have their own site but tell you you don’t need one.. that just seems dishonest to me and allows people to stay in their safe little “I don’t have to learn anything to do my business.” box.

Average marketers, either affiliate, network or internet don’t have websites… and on average over 90% of them aren’t making any money. Wanna be average? I don’t think so.

There are lots of people who will then say “but I don’t know how to build a website.” I said that for 2 whole years while begging my computer geek son to help me because my brain refused to accept html. I finally decided, this is a business either I need to figure it out, or I need to pay someone to do it for me.. Figure it out it was!

One easy solution is a blog. A blog is a website.. and it has templates and many are free. If you buy a domain name from GoDaddy, you get a free blogpage with every one. Google has free blogpages. Wordpress is a free blog service.. , and they all have templates where you copy and paste an pick pretty colors.. you don’t need to know html.

You have to start somewhere and you have to learn it now. Once you have your foot in the “website door” and start to learn then you can move on to more advanced things.

The other thing I hear is “My company gives me a free web-page”. True, they do, and Google, Yahoo, MSN and all the other search engines will NOT find it. There are literally thousands and thousands just like yours out there. The only people going there are the ones you tell to go there or if you actively drive traffic to it. If you are going to drive traffic wouldn’t you rather drive traffic to a site that you can actually have some control over?? Just adding your “bio” doesn’t cut it as far as changes to a replicated site and wont do a thing for the search engines.

What if you’re not afraid to build a website, know you need one and just don’t know how or who? Well if you are a computer geek you already know the answer to that but if you are like the rest of us then I have some suggestions.

It depends on your budget and what you want to accomplish and how fast. If you have NO money.. well first how can you run a business with no money.. I digress.. You can put up a free blog as I suggested above. If you are on a somewhat limited budget I have found GoDaddy’s Website Tonight to be reasonable and workable in the short term.. somewhat inflexible, but you don’t know that until you start getting good at copy and paste and then seeing what other websites can do that this cant. :)

My last suggestion is to look at SiteBuildIt. This is really professional stuff, and it wont break the bank either. What I like most about it is that it lets you be advanced where you know how to do things and yet has the tools for the things you are learning.. and oh - they provide training for you.. how many website companies do you know that will do that included in your cost.

I personally have all three. They all serve a purpose and helped with my learning curve. So to the question “Do I really need a website?” YES YES YES you do! And the sooner you accept that the better.
